NEW YORK (AP) - A senior Sanofi-Aventis SA executive said he fears the negative publicity over bizarre side effects tied to the sleeping pill Ambien will hurt the drug's sales.
A drop in sales would be "natural given what ugly things the Americans have had to read," Hanspeter Spek, Sanofi's executive vice president of pharmaceutical operations, said in a brief interview with The Associated Press after an analyst meeting.
Spek said he couldn't estimate how much sales might drop. During a presentation, Spek said the company hadn't seen any decline in sales since recent reports that some patients taking Ambien either drive or binge eat while sleepwalking and then have no recollection of their activities.
