Man Found Guilty of Punching Ron Artest

Monday, March 27, 2006 8:11:51 PM
By TOM KRISHER

John Green, 41, and his attorney Shawn Smith, left, watch a replay of the basketball brawl at The Palace of Auburn Hills during Green's trial in Rochester Hills, Mich., Monday, March 27, 2006. A jury began deliberations Monday in a case against Green, who is accused of throwing the cup that sparked a 2004 brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans at the Palace. Green is charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault and battery and is the only person with a case still pending in the Nov. 19, 2004 brawl. If convicted, he faces up to 93 days and/or a $500 fine on each count. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio) ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) - The man accused of sparking the brawl between players and fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills in 2004 was convicted of assault Monday for punching Ron Artest.

John Green was acquitted, however, of throwing a cup at Artest — who was playing for the Pacers at the time — before the forward charged into the stands and began fighting with Detroit Pistons fans.

Green was the last person with a case pending after the brawl, one of the worst in U.S. sports history.
