WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada said Tuesday he is dropping his opposition to the promotion of a Coast Guard vice admiral who headed Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.
Ensign, a former veterinarian who criticized pet evacuation efforts after the hurricane, had been blocking President Bush's nomination of Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen to be commandant of the Coast Guard.
Bush nominated Allen in January and the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved the nomination earlier this month.
