CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela said Wednesday it is in talks with Italy's Eni SpA to obtain millions of dollars in unpaid taxes, while confirming that France's Total SA had paid off its tax bill.
The government recently seized oil fields from the two European oil companies and had billed them for taxes dating back years as part of a campaign by President Hugo Chavez to extract a greater share of revenues from the industry at a time of high oil prices.
Tax chief Vielma Mora told reporters Wednesday that Eni owes roughly $68.2 million in unpaid taxes.
