Liberians Debate Need for War Crimes Court

Sweden is considering a request to imprison former Liberian President Charles Taylor if he is convicted of war crimes by a U.N.-backed court, a senior government official said Wednesday, April 5, 2006. A positive answer by the Scandinavian country, which already guards the top political figure convicted in the Balkan wars, would remove a key obstacle to transfer Taylor's trial to The Hague, Netherlands. (AP Photo/George Osodi, Pool) MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - The sight of their former president standing before an international war crimes court in neighboring Sierra Leone has revived a debate among Liberians about how best to confront their own history of atrocities.

Former President Charles Taylor pleaded not guilty earlier this week to charges that included murder, sexual slavery and sending children into combat, stemming from his alleged backing of rebels during Sierra Leone's 1991-2002 civil war.

He was accused of being paid for his support in diamonds, which he used to finance a civil war he had launched in Liberia in 1989.
