NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge ruled Friday that a notorious crack kingpin with ties to the rap music industry could face the death penalty a decision that will indefinitely delay his murder conspiracy trial.
Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff had been scheduled to go on trial in federal court in Brooklyn later this month with four co-defendants.
At a pretrial hearing, U.S. District Judge Frederic Block rejected a defense motion that would have stopped the prosecutors from seeking death for McGriff. The judge agreed to give him a separate trial sometime later this year so his attorneys will have more time to prepare.
