ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A coyote that was caught loping around New York's Central Park last month died of heartworms, exposure to rat poison, and the stress of his capture and handling, state pathologists reported Friday.
The coyote led police on a wild chase before being shot with a tranquilizer dart March 22. But it died March 30 as it was being tagged for release.
Gabrielle DeMarco, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said the coyote had an advanced case of heartworms and suffered from internal bleeding caused by rat poison.
