 LIVERPOOL, England (AP) - Numbersixvalverde won the Grand National steeplechase Saturday, pulling away from 2005 winner Hedgehunter at the last fence to give Niall Madden a victory in his first ride in the race.
In the 159th running of the world's most grueling steeplechase, three horses went to the final fence almost in a line with only nine of the 40 starters still running in the 4 1/2-mile race.
Tyneandthyneagain, one of the 31 horses that fell or unseated riders, was euthanized at the track because of a serious injury.
