HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Another Kentucky Derby hopeful is on his way through Arkansas and this year, one of the Natural State's most revered trainers is along for the ride.
Lawyer Ron is the early favorite for Saturday's Arkansas Derby, his final prep race before the Kentucky Derby. The chestnut colt, trained by Hot Springs resident Bob Holthus, has won five straight races and is 6-for-6 lifetime on dirt.
The last two Arkansas Derby champions were Smarty Jones and Afleet Alex. Each won two-thirds of the Triple Crown, with Smarty Jones winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in 2004, and Afleet Alex taking the Preakness and the Belmont last year.
