 SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters tennis tournament to avoid peaking too early ahead of next month's French Open.
Hewitt told the ATP Tennis Tour he would not play in next week's tournament, which is the first clay-court event of the Masters series and regarded as an important tuneup for May's French Open, his manager Rob Aivatoglou confirmed Thursday.
Aivatoglou said there was "nothing sinister" in Hewitt's withdrawal and denied there were any injury concerns.
