HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) - Australia's foreign minister held talks with the embattled leader of the Solomon Islands on Saturday, calling for economic reforms to ease tensions that instigated devastating riots this week.
Australia, New Zealand and Fiji have boosted the number of troops sent to the troubled South Pacific archipelago to more than 1,000 following two days of unrest that inflicted tens of millions of dollars in damage on the capital's Chinatown.
"Economic reform is going to be central to the survival of the country," Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told reporters after meeting with Solomon Prime Minister Snyder Rini. "There needs to be significant improvement."
