DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) - A ferry carrying passengers and cargo on East Africa's Lake Victoria capsized a week ago, and 28 people were missing and feared dead, police said Friday.
The MV Nyamanga was heading from the western port city of Bukoba to Mwanza on the southern shore of the lake, 1,100 miles west of Dar es Salaam, when it sank on April 21, Kagera Regional Police Cmdr. Ignatius Mbinga said by telephone.
Police spokesman Juma Mtumwa had earlier said the vessel sank Thursday, but Mbinga said police were alerted of the sinking that day after fishermen found dead bodies floating in the lake.
