CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Australia's prime minister appealed Friday for a further tightening of gun control laws, as relatives marked the 10th anniversary of the nation's deadliest recorded shooting spree, in which a lone gunman killed 35 people.
Prime Minister John Howard convinced state leaders to introduce strict gun controls after Martin Bryant, armed with a semiautomatic rifle, went on a rampage on April 28, 1996, at Port Arthur, a historic tourist site in Tasmania state.
Authorities banned military-style firearms and restricted categories of people who could own guns. More than a half-million weapons were surrendered in a federally funded buyback.
