Giants, Fans to Pay Tribute to Bonds

San Francisco Giants Barry Bonds gets a handshake from third base coach Gene Glynn after he hit a home run, the 712th of his career, against San Diego Padres pitcher Scott Linebrink in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, May 2, 2006 in San Francisco. (AP Photo/Dino Vournas) SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - To the San Francisco Giants, Barry Bonds is family — from his childhood days trailing his father and godfather around the clubhouse to his record-setting career that has drawn millions of fans.

No matter that some around baseball believe Bonds took steroids to achieve his long list of accomplishments and climb the career home run list, the Giants will commemorate his 715th home run with fanfare.

When Bonds tied Willie Mays for third place two years ago with 660 home runs, the Giants unfurled a banner of Bonds on the left side of the center-field scoreboard to match one of his godfather on the other side. When he passes Babe Ruth's 714 home runs for second place, his team will pay tribute in similar fashion.
