HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) - Lawmakers elected opposition leader Manasseh Sogavare as the new prime minister of the Solomon Islands on Thursday, officials said, 16 days after his predecessor's election sparked riots.
Sogavare won the ballot as leader of a four-party coalition. Supporters outside the Parliament building sang the national anthem in celebration.
Among the 50 lawmakers who voted in the secret ballot were two held in custody in the capital's Rove Prison charged with helping incite rioting, arson and looting that broke out on April 18 with the election of former Prime Minister Snyder Rini. He later resigned to avoid a no-confidence motion in Parliament.
