(AP) - Ron Washington grabbed a hammer and pounded a few nails into the wood that will become a home for a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

For the Oakland Athletics' popular third base coach, taking part in the organization's efforts to help the victims of the nation's worst natural disaster was a given. Washington himself is a native of New Orleans and spent the winter working to rebuild his house in the Big Easy.

"I know right now I'm displaced, but I'm not out," Washington said Thursday before Oakland played the Cleveland Indians. "I don't have a home to go to, but I'm not as bad off as thousands of people are."
