DENVER (AP) - Pro basketball is Jerry Schemmel's thing. Still, the Denver Nuggets play-by-play announcer shares a poignant bond with the winning trainer of Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
Like Michael Matz, the trainer for Derby winner Barbaro, Schemmel also is a survivor of United flight 232, the plane that went down in an Iowa cornfield in 1989, killing 111 of the 296 passengers aboard.
Like Matz, Schemmel also helped shepherd survivors out of the wreckage. The longtime NBA radio announcer has written a book, "Chosen to Live," and gives motivational speeches describing his experience on the flight and how it has changed his life.
