JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Thousands cheered South Africa's former deputy president at a fundraiser for his defense a day before the verdict in his rape trial, which focused the nation's attention on AIDS and sexual violence.
A crowd of some 10,000 people cheered when Jacob Zuma arrived at the concert fundraiser in the township of Soweto, underlining the 64-year-old former freedom fighter's continuing popularity among many South Africans.
"Your support is very important, and it gives me the strength to go on," he said in Zulu, according to the South African Press Association.
