ROME (AP) - Roger Federer's recent loss to Rafael Nadal taught the top-ranked player a lesson he needs to improve his clay-court game.
Federer arrived early for the Rome Masters along with part-time coach Tony Roche. On Monday, Federer breezed past Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, showing off a more aggressive style than usual on clay.
"I guess I had to," Federer said. "Chela plays so far back in the court that he gives me more time. I think we all have still the match in mind with Nadal, where obviously it's more difficult to attack."
