Puerto Rico Unions Call Off Protests

Tuesday, May 09, 2006 6:30:36 PM
By MANUEL ERNESTO RIVERA

Just after sunrise, Puerto Ricans march near the Panamerican Pier, protesting the current partial government shutdown which has temporarily left roughly 100, 000 people jobless and 1600 schools closed, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tuesday, May 9, 2006. Puerto Rico's governor and congressional leaders have agreed to abide by recommendations of a commission created to solve a fiscal crisis that has eroded the Puerto rican Government's shaky credit rating. (AP Photo/Ricardo Arduengo) EFE OUTSAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Union leaders called off island-wide protests on Tuesday as a special commission looked for answers to a fiscal crisis that has partially closed the government and eroded the credit rating of this U.S. territory.

Though some 150 protesting teachers blocked traffic at a port in San Juan where cruise ships dock, Puerto Rico's three biggest unions — which represent most of the more than 95,000 furloughed public employees — instead urged politicians to resolve the crisis, now in its ninth day.

The commission was expected to announce its recommendations Wednesday.
