BERLIN (AP) - German utility E.On AG said Wednesday that its first-quarter net profit increased by about 18 percent, helped by higher power prices and strong natural gas demand during an unusually cold European winter.
Net earnings for the January-March period were 1.72 billion euros ($2.19 billion), up from 1.46 billion euros a year earlier. That beat the forecast of analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires, who had predicted profit of 1.56 billion euros ($1.98 billion).
Sales increased 37 percent, rising to 21.5 billion euros ($27.3 billion) from 15.8 billion euros.
