NEW YORK (AP) - Seven yachts set off Thursday for a trip from New York to England on the next leg of an around-the-world race that launched six months ago.
The yachts were headed for Portsmouth, England, after a two-day pit stop in New York Harbor. Hundreds of spectators lined a stretch of lower Manhattan to watch the competitors sail out past the Statue of Liberty at the start of a 2,925-mile trip.
"You've got to give them credit for being able to go around the world in these boats," said Jim Barry, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority planner, watching the start on his lunch hour.
