King Carl XVI Gustaf boards a spectator cruise to see the beginning of the next leg of the Volvo Ocean Race in New York, Thursday, May 11, 2006. The racing yachts start the 7th leg of the 31,250 nautical mile round-the-world race today, bound for Portsmouth, England. The race finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden. (AP Photo/Shiho Fukada)NEW YORK (AP) - Seven yachts set off Thursday for a trip from New York to England on the next leg of an around-the-world race that launched six months ago.

The yachts were headed for Portsmouth, England, after a two-day pit stop in New York Harbor. Hundreds of spectators lined a stretch of lower Manhattan to watch the competitors sail out past the Statue of Liberty at the start of a 2,925-mile trip.

"You've got to give them credit for being able to go around the world in these boats," said Jim Barry, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority planner, watching the start on his lunch hour.
