Calpine Posts $9.9 Billion Loss in 2005

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Bankrupt power wholesaler Calpine Corp. suffered a $9.9 billion loss last year, sunk by the weight of its debts and a decaying portfolio of electricity plants.

The San Jose-based company detailed the losses Friday in its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The setback, representing mostly noncash charges, nearly equaled Calpine's 2005 revenue of $10.1 billion.

Most publicly held companies provided their 2005 reports months ago, but Calpine needed extra time because of complications caused by a five-month-old bankruptcy case that ranks among the largest ever filed in corporate America.
