DiMaggio Auction Begins With Trophy Bid

(AP Photo/Hunt Auctions) NEW YORK (AP) - Joe DiMaggio's 1947 AL Most Valuable Player award fetched more than $280,000 Friday during the first day of an auction of his memorabilia.

The plaque sold for $281,750, which included a 15 percent buyer's premium.

The buyer was Pete Siegel, a collector and dealer from New York who owns Gotta Have It! Collectibles in midtown Manhattan. Siegel said he's buying the item and others to open a museum for the public.
