SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck near the Pacific island of Tonga, the U.S. Geological survey said Sunday. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake hit at 4:36 p.m. local time (11:36 p.m. EDT) around 89 miles northeast of Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, and 1,330 miles northeast of Auckland, New Zealand.
There was no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami associated with the earthquake, said Barry Hirshorn, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
