SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological survey said Sunday. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake hit at 1:12 p.m. local time (11:12 p.m. EDT) around 117 miles northeast of Papua New Guinea's New Britain region and 1,500 miles north of Brisbane, Australia.
The quake posed no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami, said Barry Hirshorn, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
