BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of his mother by neglect in a case that spurred an investigation by state lawmakers.
Shirley Chittum, 71, was found wrapped in blankets on a sofa at her home on Dec. 2, soiled by feces and urine with maggots on her body. She died the next day at a hospital, weighing 62 pounds.
Her son, Paul Chittum, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder. His voice cracked as he told Benton County Circuit Judge David Clinger he was sorry.
