U.S. to Introduce Liberia Arms Resolution

Tuesday, June 06, 2006 3:04:09 PM
By PAUL BURKHARDT

Liberian woman stand in a queue to be recruited in the new post war army at the city of Monrovia, Liberia, Monday, June 5, 2006. The new army will initially number 2,000 troops, and roughly 400 of them will be women, said Edith Bawn, spokeswoman for the government body responsible for overseeing the creation of the armed forces that includes representatives of the United Nations and the United States. (AP Photo/Jonathan Paye-Layleh) UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United States will introduce a U.N. Security Council resolution to lift the arms embargo on Liberia, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said Tuesday.

The resolution would help bring peace and stability to Liberia as its president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, tries to rebuild the country after years of war and civil strife under Charles Taylor, Bolton said. Johnson Sirleaf requested the embargo be lifted.

"It may seem counterintuitive to start with this, but this was what the president herself thought was important," Bolton said of the resolution, which was expected to be introduced later Tuesday.
