France's Ambassador to the UN Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, left, is seen with Apollinaire Malu Malu, president of Congo's Independent Electoral Commission, in Kinshasa, Congo Sunday, June 11, 2006. The visit by members of the United Nations Security Council came seven weeks ahead of Congo's planned July 30 elections, seen as key to ending years of strife and bringing lasting stability to a nation that has known little but conflict, coups and dictatorship since independence from Belgium in 1960.(AP Photo/John Bompengo)KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - Congo's president told the U.N. Security Council on Monday he would do his utmost to stop political intimidation and incitement of hatred during campaigning for the country's first national elections in more than four decades, diplomats said.

The council later held separate meetings with Congo's four vice presidents — three of whom also are running for president in the July 30 ballot.
