DILI, East Timor (AP) - Dan Murphy came to help East Timor's people as they built a nation, and watching the country's return to violence and chaos has been painful.
The Iowa-born doctor opened a medical clinic in Dili in 1999, at the height of the scorched-earth aftermath of East Timor's independence ballot. It has given him a unique vantage point to follow the country's progress after decades of Indonesian rule.
"I used to say things have improved; I'm not doing any more bullet wounds," the lanky 61-year-old told The Associated Press while examining a patient for a chest complaint. "But now we've seen more bullet wounds over the last couple of weeks, so that's a little bit disconcerting."
