American Doctor Feels Pain of East Timor

Wednesday, June 14, 2006 3:42:49 PM
By ROD McGUIRK

East Timorese men set up about 200 tents for displaced people at an airport in Dili, East Timor, Monday, June, 12, 2006. East Timor pleaded for international help Monday to feed and house some 100,000 people displaced in the capital after fighting erupted among military factions and rival gangs more than one month ago. (AP Photo/Firdia Lisnawati)DILI, East Timor (AP) - Dan Murphy came to help East Timor's people as they built a nation, and watching the country's return to violence and chaos has been painful.

The Iowa-born doctor opened a medical clinic in Dili in 1999, at the height of the scorched-earth aftermath of East Timor's independence ballot. It has given him a unique vantage point to follow the country's progress after decades of Indonesian rule.

"I used to say things have improved; I'm not doing any more bullet wounds," the lanky 61-year-old told The Associated Press while examining a patient for a chest complaint. "But now we've seen more bullet wounds over the last couple of weeks, so that's a little bit disconcerting."
