Once-Vibrant Tamil City Prepares for War

Thursday, June 22, 2006 2:18:20 PM
By BHARATHA MALLAWARACHI

A woman walks past a Sri Lankan military armored vehicle and a soldier on a motorbike in Jaffna, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in this Wednesday, June 21, 2006. Amid rising tension, and rising violence, between the government and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, there are signs that civil war may come back to this tropical island. (AP Photo/Eranga Jayawardena)JAFFNA, Sri Lanka (AP) - Judging by the scenes in the Tamil heartland — the tanks, the armored personnel carriers, the soldiers digging bunkers — this is a place preparing for battle.

The Jaffna Peninsula, and its once-vibrant main city, may well be the major theater if rising tensions and violence between the government and Tamil separatists erupt into the full-scale civil war that many worry is coming to Sri Lanka.
