TOKYO (AP) - Japan's Supreme Court on Friday rejected a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the prime minister's visits to a widely criticized war shrine, an issue that has damaged Tokyo's relations with its neighbors.
The suit, filed by relatives of Japanese, Chinese and South Korean war dead, argued that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's 2001 visit to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine violated the division between religion and state.
The ruling rejected the plaintiffs' demand for compensation for psychological suffering caused by the visit and refused to address its constitutionality.
