BALTIMORE (AP) - The Chicago White Sox had every right to curse their luck. Down by two runs in the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles, Ross Gload stepped to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. The seldom-used Gload was in the game as a replacement for All-Star first baseman Paul Konerko, who bruised his left shin when he fouled a pitch off it in the fifth inning.
"I'm sure no one really wanted to see me up there in the ninth," Gload said.
Gload hit a grand slam off Chris Ray, ruining Erik Bedard's bid to win his eighth consecutive start and giving the White Sox a rousing 6-4 victory Friday night.
