Bernardini Wins in a Jim Dandy Blowout

Saturday, July 29, 2006 6:11:20 PM
By RICHARD ROSENBLATT

Bernardini, with jackey Javier Castellano aboard, comes down the stretch to win the 131st running of the Preakness Stakes, in this May 20, 2006 photo, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. With historic Saratoga Race Course as the setting, Bernardini gets his chance to outrun the shadow of Barbaro. In Saturday's Jim Dandy Stakes, the 3-year-old colt makes his first start since winning the May 20 Preakness Stakes, a race everyone remembers as the one in which Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro shattered his right hind leg in the opening strides.(AP Photo/Jim Dietz)SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Bernardini will not be overlooked again. The brilliant 3-year-colt outclassed the field in the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, proving to just about everyone that his victory in the Preakness Stakes was no fluke.

"I guess there was a lot of doubt in people's minds about the Preakness," winning trainer Tom Albertrani said. "Today, he showed us what a really good horse he is. I wasn't really surprised."

Usually cautious with his comments, Albertrani has been raving about Bernardini ever since the colt's 5 1/4-victory in the May 20 Preakness, a race that will be remembered as the one in which Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro shattered his right hind leg in the first few strides.
