Seychelles President Wins Election

(AP Photo/Xinhua, Wang Hongda)VICTORIA, Seychelles (AP) - The incumbent leader of the Seychelles islands off the coast of eastern Africa won the country's presidential election, officials said.

President James Michel of the People's Progressive Front won nearly 54 percent of the vote over the weekend, while opposition leader Wavel Ramkalawan got 46 percent, electoral commission spokesman Hendrick Gappy said Monday.

Michel, the former vice president, was appointed to the presidency in 2004 after longtime leader Albert Rene stepped down before the end of his term. He will now serve a five-year term.
