ON THE CONGO-SUDAN BORDER (AP) - The elusive leader of a brutal Ugandan rebellion said Tuesday he was committed to negotiating a cease-fire and peace agreement after 19 years of war that has killed thousands and forced children to become fighters.
"I will try ... to talk so that we cease the fire," said Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. He denied committing war crimes.
Kony held his first formal meeting Tuesday with Riek Machar, vice president of the autonomous government of Southern Sudan and chief mediator of the northern Uganda peace talks, and a Ugandan government negotiator.
