SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Bill Boland's long trip to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame started in 1948 when he was barely a teenager riding a train from his native Texas to storied Belmont Park.
Two years later, as a 16-year-old apprentice jockey, Boland won the 1950 Kentucky Derby aboard Middleground. He was only the second apprentice to win the Derby.
On Monday, Boland joined Carl Hanford, trainer of the famed Kelso, and champion thoroughbred Cougar II as the newest inductees into at the hall of fame, across the street from Saratoga Race Course.
