ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) - Ivory Coast will not be able to hold planned elections on Oct. 31 because of voter registration problems, the head of the U.N. mission said Wednesday.
The elections are meant to move Ivory Coast divided between a government-controlled south and a rebel-held north toward a united government. The country has been divided since fighting broke out in 2002. Peace is maintained by about 10,000 U.N. and French forces patrolling a buffer zone between the two regions.
U.N. mission chief Pierre Schori said it would not be "technically feasible to hold the elections on the 31st of October because the identification process and electoral registration have not been completed," said Margherita Amodeo, mission spokeswoman.
