DILI, East Timor (AP) - Rival gangs armed with machetes and stones fought in East Timor's capital late Thursday, injuring at least 13 people, witnesses and officials said. Hundreds of youths took part in the fighting in front of Guido Valadares Hospital, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.
A hospital staffer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said that 13 people were being treated and two had serious injuries.
East Timor was plunged into crisis in May when rival security forces battled in Dili's streets, later spilling into gang warfare, looting and arson that left 30 people dead and sent nearly 150,000 fleeing from their homes.
