TOKYO (AP) - A nuclear test by North Korea would pose a "grave threat" to Japan and the rest of Northeast Asia, a top government spokesman said Friday, amid reports Japan is boosting surveillance of the reclusive communist nation.
The comments by Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe came after Kyodo News agency reported that vehicles have been seen in recent days at what is thought to be a nuclear testing site in northeastern North Korea.
Abe did not confirm the report, saying he could not comment on what Japan knows because of intelligence reasons, but he urged Pyongyang to return to the stalled six-nation talks on its nuclear disarmament.
