WESLACO, Texas (AP) - Stepped-up enforcement and detention procedures have sharply reduced the number of people attempting illegal entry into the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.
The number of people arrested trying to sneak across the border has dropped by one-third, Chertoff said. He said he believes that indicates that illegal immigration has dropped as well.
Chertoff was on the Texas-Mexico border the day after declaring the end of a "catch and release" policy that had been blamed on lack of detention space for immigrants subject to deportation procedures.
