Less than two weeks after a battery recall affected more than 4 million laptops, Apple Computer Inc. told customers Thursday to return 1.8 million lithium-ion batteries used in Mac laptops because they could cause the computers to overheat and ignite. (AP Photo/Apple Computer Inc., Johansen Krause, file)SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - In a second major PC battery recall, Apple Computer is telling consumers to return 1.8 million Mac laptop batteries with both product recalls traced to the same manufacturing plight.

The faulty lithium-ion batteries used by Apple and Dell Inc. — which announced its recall of 4.1 units on Aug. 14 — all were made by a Sony Corp. subsidiary at a Japanese plant. In their recall announcements, Apple and Dell said the batteries can cause the computers to short circuit, overheat or even catch fire.

Sony Energy Devices Corp. said the recalls will cost it between $172 million and $278 million.
