Gostkowski Named Vinatieri's Successor

Friday, August 25, 2006 6:32:01 AM
By HOWARD ULMAN

New England Patriots special teams coach Brad Seely watches kicker Stephen Gostkowski (3) kicking a ball during the team's summer football camp in Foxborough, Mass. in this July 30, 2006 file photo. Gostkowski was nervous for just the first day of training camp as a rookie kicker with the New England Patriots. That composure paid off when he won the competition to replace Adam Vinatieri. (AP Photo/Chitose Suzuki, File)FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Out of habit, Patriots holder Josh Miller occasionally sets the ball down the way Adam Vinatieri liked. Miller figures rookie Stephen Gostkowski, the man he's holding for now, can't say much. After all, the technique worked so well for one of football's top clutch kickers.

"I just tell him, 'Adam likes it this way,'" Miller said Thursday. "He's new and he hasn't missed, so what's he going to say? He has nothing to say yet."

Gostkowski, a fourth-round draft pick out of Memphis, beat out veteran Martin Gramatica for the Patriots' kicking job. The rookie made all four field-goal attempts in his first two exhibition games and kicked off well.
