BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Commission said Friday that it believes Spain broke antitrust laws by attaching conditions to a bid by Germany's E.On AG to take over Spanish utility Endesa.
Spain's National Energy Commission ruled in July that it would only allow the euro26.9 billion ($34.3 billion) deal to go ahead with several conditions that would require E.On to sell about a third of Endesa's power generation assets.
European Union regulators said they will wait for Spain's response due by Sept. 4 before making a final ruling that Spain has broken antitrust laws, a decision that would force Madrid to withdraw conditions imposed by the Spanish energy authority, CNE.
