MADISON, Ind. (AP) - A pre-dawn fire that destroyed a century-old Elks Lodge and the former city hall Friday was doused by firefighters before it spread deeper into one of the nation's largest historic landmark districts.
Mayor Al Huntington said the 1902 Elks Lodge and an 1876 building that housed Madison's city hall until 1994 were reduced to smoldering brick shells. It was unclear if they were stable enough to be saved for eventual restoration, he said.
But Huntington was relieved the fire did not spread deeper into the Ohio River community's 2,000 acres of 19th century and early 20th century brick homes and storefronts, which the National Park Service in April declared a National Historic Landmark District.
