CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Federal regulators can withhold the names of miners who asked the United Mine Workers of America to represent them in the investigation of the Sago Mine explosion, a judge ruled.
A subsidiary of Sago owner International Coal Group had asked a federal judge to force the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration to turn over the names. But U.S. District Judge Robert Maxwell denied the request in a ruling dated Wednesday.
"We're glad that the judge upheld the right of these workers to have representation and to do so without fear of being exposed and being intimidated by the company," union spokesman Phil Smith said.
