Sri Lanka Military Offensive Kills 28

Monday, August 28, 2006 3:08:01 PM
By RUWAN WEERAKOON

A Sri Lankan officer deploys soldiers close to the Mavilaaru reservoir, in Mavilaaru, close to Trincomalee, about 220 kilometers (138 miles) northeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, Monday, Aug. 28, 2006. The rebels closed sluice gates from the reservoir on July 20, cutting water to over 60,000 people living in government-controlled villages, after accusing the government of reneging on a pledge to boost water in rebel-held areas. The government launched an offensive in an attempt to reopen the sluice gates, and ensuing clashes raised fears of a return to full-scale warfare. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe)COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - Sri Lanka's armed forces launched airstrikes and fired artillery as they advanced Monday on a strategic Tamil Tiger-held enclave, killing at least 28 people, the military and rebels said.

The military said eight soldiers were killed and 28 wounded as ground troops backed by air force jets battled their way toward rebel-held Sampur, to the south of the strategic Trincomalee port.

The insurgents said at least 20 ethnic Tamil civilians were killed.
