SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - A ventilation system breakdown Friday caused a buildup of carbon monoxide in a subway station and nearby underground shopping area, and 30 people were sent to hospitals with headaches and other ailments, police said.
Nobody was seriously hurt after the gas buildup that forced the evacuation of the Jonggak subway station and nearby shops, said Choi Gyu-hwan, an officer at Jongno Police Station.
The defect increased the carbon monoxide level in the air of the station and shopping area to up to 70 percent, causing people to become ill, the officer said.
