GENEVA (AP) - Up to 14 open-air sites in Ivory Coast's port city of Abidjan have been contaminated by toxic waste, and four trucks that transported the waste are missing, U.N. officials said Friday.
Ivory Coast's Health Ministry has said six people have so far died and some 9,000 have sought medical assistance after the waste had been improperly disposed by a local contractor working for Dutch-based commodities company Trafigura Beheer B.V.
Abidjan residents have complained about an offensive stench, and mounting public anger resulted in the resignation of the government last week.
