Hurricane Helene Forms in Open Atlantic

Saturday, September 16, 2006 10:20:25 PM

This NOAA satellite image taken Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at 02:15 PM EDT shows shows a swirl of clouds in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean associated with Hurricane Gordon. This system will continue to move northeastward. Elsewhere, clouds over New England and the Mid-Atlantic are not providing any significant precipitation to the region. Other than a thunderstorm or two over Louisiana, the rest of the East is remaining dry. Out West, a cold trough of low pressure is providing the season's first snowstorm to the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies. (AP PHOTO/WEATHER UNDERGROUND)MIAMI (AP) - Hurricane Helene formed Saturday in the open Atlantic, while a weakened Hurricane Gordon drifted slowly, also hundreds of miles from land, forecasters said.

Helene had top sustained winds of 80 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It is the fourth hurricane of the season.

At 11 p.m. EDT, Helene was centered about 1,025 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands and moving west-northwest at 10 mph, forecasters said.
